在中国和在澳洲， 这是两个完全不同级别的职业。
国内的眼镜店验光师只是配眼镜的时候测度数而已。
在澳洲，验光师是医学专业人士。包括了多项工作职责。 举例，眼病问题，你可以找GP或直接找optometrist，如果GP诊断为眼病问题，就会referral你去眼科医院或者是去眼镜店看optometrist，下一步，再由他们referral去看Ophthalmologist （偶尔GP也会直接referral）. 又例如，如果是眼部手术， 眼病术科专科医生手术，但maintain eye health 是optometrist. 又例如， 糖尿病的眼部状况是由optometrist检查的。又例如，optometrist拥有处方权。 换句话说， optometrist的角色，有一点像专于眼部的“GP”。度数验光只是optometrist的其中一个工作。

What does an Optometrist do?
Optometrists may perform the following tasks:
1. determine the nature and extent of vision and eye problems and disease by examining patients' eyes using specialised instruments, techniques and tests
2. correct vision defects by prescribing and dispensing glasses or contact lenses, special optical aids or vision therapy
3. examine patients for signs of eye disease and systemic conditions, including glaucoma, diabetes, high blood pressure and multiple sclerosis, and work with medical practitioners and eye surgeons to co-manage patients when required
4. manage some eye conditions by prescribing ocular therapeutic drugs
5. monitor patients' vision and ocular health with the use of imaging techniques such as digital retinal photography and computerised vision tests
6. conduct eye screening and testing for the purposes of determining occupational fitness or fitness to drive
7.undertake managerial, retail and administrative tasks.
