Chemicals
Sydney tap water contains disinfectants like chlorine and chloramine, as well as fluoride for dental health. Trace amounts of heavy metals like lead, copper, cadmium, and arsenic may also be present. In June 2024, Sydney Water detected low levels of perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), also known as "forever chemicals", in some of its water filtration plants. The levels were higher at the Cascade Dam in the Blue Mountains and North Richmond. However, health authorities have said that Sydney's water is safe to drink and meets Australian government guidelines.
Disease-causing organisms
Cryptosporidium and Giardia have been detected in Sydney's water distribution system. While no increase in disease has been identified, the Sydney Water Inquiry has concluded that further disinfection technologies may be needed.
Taste and odor
Drinking water may have a metallic or chlorine taste or odor due to the chlorine added to kill germs. This is harmless and the taste and smell should disappear if you let the water stand in a jug for about an hour or keep it in the fridge.
